Excellent article! I just got done having a get-together with my team over hot dogs and soda, and stressing these very same points. I'm in agreement 100%.

Randy,

your article is "BRILLIANT". I have found that the average person (worshiper) coming in on Sunday morning is usually still asleep. (1rst service that is)

Anyways, sometimes it can be good to help ease people into the worship (kind of like coffee) with mayby a slower more invitational song and then build on it, like arobics? Of course, we want to do what the Holy Spirit is doing.

But regardless of how we feel on any given Sunday, if we truly recognize what Jesus has done for us, then what is the only appropriate response? This in direct response to your words; "because my personal difficulty hasn't changed who God is"

I think most people default to songs they like and so will tend to sing them more often. I felt that during this economic crisis that a song like I Will Trust and Call Upon Your Name would be appropriate. They really speak to the heart of what people are going through right now. At the same time we need to sing Awesome God because my personal difficulty hasn't changed who God is.

Great stuff Randy. Thanks for sharing! All of these make total sense; particularly the last one ...Picking the songs. This one strikes a chord with many lately. Essentially we need to make sure we're listening to God's still small voice when (and however) we choose what to play...I find that all too often people choose their favorite songs and don't give a whole lot of consideration of what God is doing in the church, what He's saying in their midst, and what is being preached each week. Hopefully we're being challenged to pursue what God wants to do and not our own agendas...it's way more healthy for the body and way more Spirit filled!
