As worship leaders I think that it’s very important to be aware of how the congregation is responding to worship. Any comments or things that you do to help people engage?

i try to make it a point to meet peoples’ eyes…awkward? yes. but i feel like i’m connecting with people. i feel like i’m singing truth, love, and all that good stuff into peoples’ lives, into their hearts. some people will engage, and some people just stare straight back!

Thanks Danielle,
I’m taking this approach to heart for the next couple of weeks as we usually come out all positive like with both barrells blazing.

Here are a few things you can do:
1. take a look around just before the worship starts.
Those who are anxious to ‘enter in’ are normally in their
seats early. Focus on them during the first song.
It will give you a boost of confidence.
2. as the first song’s intro is being played,
invite everyone to enter in. Ask them to leave the
week behind and come pour their love over Jesus. remind them
that this is the time to “minister to God” and be thankful for
His blessings.
3. start your first song with a minute or two of open worship.
that relaxes folks and shows them that you are about to take them
to the throne room … watch how they melt during that brief
interlude! Then as you go, you’ll see them reach deeper. And you’ll
be able to lead them deeper as the set moves forward!

Hey all. Great approaches and good point about keeping eyes open. Here is something else that we’ve added:
Giving a brief explanation of “who you are” and what you are about to do is always helpful for newcomers. Also, we intentionally invite people to sing to God, and do whatever is comfortable for them ie. sit, stand, whatever.
