Assuming there are three basic categories of worship songs:
1. Man to God
2. God to Man
3. Man to Man
I believe all of these are biblical and valid depending on the season the church is in.
So I ask, what season do you sense we are in and which types of songs most appropriately express that?

I agree with Randy also…I start the worship set with a “man to man” like Beth, and then spend some time in “man to God” for the most part. “God to man” is definitely great for ministry time…

Hmm..interesting Debbie! I am planning to attend a “pursuit of holiness” conference on Cape Cod on Oct 30th. Weird! Generally, I like the idea of buying a coke, and praying for people, but I also want to be open to what the Lord is saying to the larger body of Christ. My wife recently quoted Joyce Myer, “God doesn’t do stuff for us, He does stuff in us so that He can use us for the kingdom to go forward” I wonder if God is birthing something new? Great to see you in NC!

hi,
this is an awesome question! i’ve been thinking a lot about this lately…i recently have felt really convicted to ask myself this question on a daily basis.
lately i have been feeling, at least for our church, that the Lord is really calling for more holiness. i’ve been trying to choose songs that are focused on his holiness and songs that challenge us towards holiness.
i guess that qualifies as man to god?

I agree with Randy. But sometimes a set is heavier in one area than another. Personally I am heavier with Man to God and God to Man. I may only do one Man to man in the beginning to get everyone’s attention.

Is it is possible to have all three categories in one set? Singing to
each other could be a call to worship song, singing to God is our
expression of worship and praise and God to us would work well in a
ministry setting.

rabbit trail…
Seth, holiness is a concept that was awakened in me this past year as never before. I’d be interested to hear what that conference brought to you.
I don’t see a new holiness movement as being like the Wesleys with radical self denial etc. but more of moving into being who Jesus professes us to be. I think it’s grasping the realization that I am not merely a sinner barely saved by grace ( think eeyore) but instead a co-heir with Christ, seated in heavenly places, declared righteous, destined for glory and being made holy, a slave to righteousness!
That’s VERY good stuff, and a far cry from the struggle of the romans 7 jews ( who Paul was trying to evangelize ) yet, much of the church still declares this as being the normal Christian life! Paul’s “I don’t do what I want to do” etc is NOT a statement about his, or our new life! I just about want to puke when I hear this underlying message surviving in church these days. I honestly think it’s a successful lie of the enemy- who is trying to limit our perception of our full inheritance in Christ.
The new testament spirit filled Christian life is NOT one of struggling against sin. By the gift of the Spirit, our new man is now grounded in holiness and righteousness and being made into the image of Christ, who is holy. Wahoo!
Stepping off the soapbox…
