“Special Music”
The Christmas season is the only time we generally use “special music” in our church (and the other 3 Vineyards I have led at). “Special Music” in my personal worship dictionary being: music where the congregation is not expected to participate, except to receive a message, or be ministered to, instead. We might also do this on Easter.
This is the case because we want people to come to church to participate, not to watch.
Do you use “special music” in your services regularly? Will you be having special performances during your holiday services?
Christmas Songs and the Worship Band
I was commenting on Randy’s post with the arrangement for “O Come All Ye Faithful” and thought I’d actually like to post it here, and see what other people do…
How do you orchestrate Christmas songs for your bands?
I was just telling Randy, that I tend to play MOST of them alone on the kbd, to prevent having to squeeze them all into 3-chord band arrangements. But as out worship teams are only three people per team (a kbd, a guitar, and either a djembe or a bass) plus an extra singer, that isn’t really scaling back much for us. I love the rich chording of the traditional songs, and hate to oversimplify too much. I save that for the few we do more upbeat and full- like Joy to the World. I also like to do an instrumental with some more classical instruments like harp or flute.
What songs have worked well in your band setting? Do you scale back for more traditional arrangements?
